Because the houses are well-insulated and solar-heated, the furnaces can be downsized substantially. Energy-efficient models are standard. Programmable thermostats regulate backup heating and cooling systems, reducing demand when the house is unoccupied or residents are asleep. Insulation that keeps the houses warm in the winter also helps to maintain a cool interior in Denver''s dry, hot summers. Plus, 2-foot-wide overhangs block the high-angled summer sun and provide shade for walls and windows. "Consumers need advice when they are considering the benefits of a steam generator and this gives independent retailers a great advantage."It is important for retailers to try to understand the expectations of the customer -- to know how many people he or she irons for, how often they use an iron and how many heavy items like jeans and duvets they have that need ironing is useful to know," says Ms Herold at Philips.
